Friday, routinely timed for the track home,
But Junction 15 to 16 of the M6 is closed,
Southbound, with a reported 75-min delay,
So, I took a diversion headed westwards.
Briefly, in the clear yet blinding sunlight,
As I turned South, that casual daylight,
Began to construct heavy grey clouds,
Upon the blue sky, way into the distance.
Meadows and harvested fields flew by,
Illuminated by the glowing, golden sunset.
Then the heavens started to loosen,
Slowly introducing the quietest of spits.
Anon, out came the majestic rainbow,
Attempting to make a stop to it all.
The radio had long been switched off,
Leaving me, myself to my thoughts.
Magnificently running straight for miles,
Its radiance shining bright and bold,
Holding off the rain as much as it could,
Until itself faded, into the darkness.
Soon, all hell broke loose, as it poured,
Down, in full force and thunderous roar,
Thronging the hard street surface,
And clobbering life out of my vehicle.
Diminishing visibility, slippery surfaces,
And flash floods, are expected occurrences.
After such a record-breaking summer heat,
The city drainage has forgotten how to work.
But the colours, boy, what a spectacle!
Reflected traffic lights and headlights,
Brake lights, road signs and streetlamps,
Mesmerising, just like New Year’s fireworks!
